Nothing outside a man can make him “unclean” by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him “unclean.”

A Break With Tradition
The rabbis of Jesus’ day were emphasizing cleanliness of the body when they challenged Jesus. But Jesus was very clear in His condemnation of their focus on the outward appearance. “Blind Pharisees!” Jesus said, “First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside will also be clean,” (Matt 23:26).
What religious traditions have become barriers or stumbling blocks to your ability to present God with a pure and clean heart: Hour about styles of worship (contemporary, blended, or traditional)? How about type of dress for church, work, or play? Are these outward things representative of saint or sinner?
There are many references throughout the Scriptures comparing outward appearance and purity of heart. Too often, one had nothing to do with the other. Many times, the subject was addressed by Jesus Himself. It is often difficult to differentiate between God’s commands and human traditions. Scripture and the teaching of the Holy Spirit help us to know the heart of God.
